It gets easier. Glad it's going well. I've done a couple more longer runs (around 6miles), but still feels like death incarnated in activity.

Hopefully things will improve when I work out what I'm training *for*.

I think I am reasonably fit at the moment though so not all bad, I just need to get to grips with my head issues.

I know it is crazy! But I have to restraing myself, 5 km thrice a week is plenty for my legs and my cardiovascular system not to mention tendons and joints to handle right now, so I will rest on this for a while, let it sink in and hopefully my body will get more used to it :)

Awe.
Some.

Nice one matey, now you've done it you'll be thinking of the 10k! Hehe.

I'm intrigued as to why you chose to run so late at night...why and what was it like? I tried running in the dark once by headtorch and vowed never again because 1) even with the headtorch I couldn't see very well and it consequently slowed me down, alot. And 2) the dark is scary on your own for running - or it was for me, being a small lone woman. Creepy.

Anyway, ta for the comments on my blog - as for your point about softshells, my view of them is more as an alternative to a fleece and hardshell combo - not simply a hardshell replacement, therefore well fitting and stretchy are the way to go. Love mine to bits.

Hope you enjoy your holidays, sounds like you'll have a great time.

I know exactly what you mean about the hills, short and over quickly is definitely better (says the new-born mountaineer hehe).

I'm really struggling with motivation at the moment, it just seems so hard to actually get out and do something. I really want to be out climbing/scrambling/hill walking every day, but when it actually comes to it I'm finding, unless I'm climbing and have a partner, my motivation is severely lacking, especially when the weather is bad. I can't help but think this is because I no longer have a major goal to be training for...the next big thing is my trip to Rjukan in feb for some serious ice climbing - but that's a long way off, plus the training for that will mostly be strength work, not hill fitness. Ho hum.

Anyway, your 4k efforts sound great. Running a different route can sometimes make a big difference, not just because it's often more interesting, but often because you have no expectations as to how fast you will be which often means you relax and end up pacing really well (either that or it's a hilly/crappy surface and seriously slows you down). And asphalt is a MUCH faster surface to run on, and not necessarily that bad for the joints - it's real hard surfaces like concrete (and believe it or not hard, dry mud) that are the damaging ones for the joints.

I think I'd like that - running together, I have never done that before I always set out very early or rather late avoiding other people when I go running but to run with a friend that would be nice. I'll bring my shoes when we come visiting you in Wales and you bring yours when you come this way next time :)

My standard track is 4,3 km and it has 130 meters climb and about 140 meters downhill (so I am actually ending about 10 m lower than the position I start in) and today I did a different run, I went mostly on the asphalt and did 4 km this morning on a circuit I have never done before. And although it felt that I did not do well I actually did my personal best on 4 km!

Even so I actually did walk about 200-300 m got some pains in the front part of the shins but it went away again and then I could just resume running. 7:30 min/km roughly, not bad at all and this circuit has one long steep hill and then one more that is not very steep but about 1 km long.

I prefer steep short hills, you get them over with and then you can recover, these long suckers just drains the energy from you and produce lactic acid in the muscles!

I've started my running again in the village. Seemed like such a good idea, the trouble is, where I used to run it was mostly flat (only some slight undulations as I used to run across the airfield). The village here is different - the 2.7 mile circuit (4.3km) I've chosen starts with a steep downhill stretch, then a short steep uphill, followed by a flat(ish) woodland circuit, although actually this is really rather hilly itself), THEN I have to run BACK UP the long, steep hill I started down. I think it must be 1-2km of steep uphill. Nasty. I've done it twice now and each time I've only just made it back - the first time I thought my head was going to explode and I was going to throw up. Lovely.
And boy did it feel slow. It wasn't a blistering pace, but I need to learn not to expect to pace like I do on the flat when doing severe uphill sections!

We'll have to go running sometime - I always find running with someone much less soul destroying and painful :)

I've fallen behind a little on my schedule because of a break in my ordinary routine. I went to "SummerHack 2009" and met loads of nerds there and running was not really the top of the list of activities although we did play a Swedish simplified version of Baseball called "brännboll" and had great fun and I got some aches to prove it as well!

Today I went out together with my better half Jeanette and I did two laps on my normal path, about 3,5 km and with an average of 8 minutes/km it was not that bad.

Not brilliant either, I have in the past done 7:44/km on 4,3 km but I got a really good workout and I did not feel any pains or anything from my legs. Tonight it was my condition instead that was put to the test. I need to work more on my VO2.

But I feel good. Really good. Slowly getting there although 5 km is still a bit over the top to do it 3 times a week. No hurry however it will come...

I will do but in due time :) This week I have increased to 4,5 km as my regular run and I will then do two more runs at this distance and then I will make attempts for 5 km. My legs are still in need of growing some more muscles but my condition is quite good enough but my legs needs a bit more time to learn the trade.

I'll get there next week or so, no hurry really. After that I will be staying on 5 km for a while to make sure everything gets used to the running and rather than increasing the distance I will run my 5 km in different paces trying to get better speed and run more on asphalt and other types of ground as well. After that the trip to 10 km can start!

And next year around this time actually, I will run "Midnattsloppet" a competition in Stockholm city in the middle of the night, 10 km. That is a goal currently and I'll be darned if I can't make that!

Awesome stuff mate, sounds like you're going really well! Why not just have a crack at the 5km? If you're managing 4.2 or 4.3 with relative ease you should have no trouble at all. After that you'll be aiming for the 10km!

Now I'm back from the Alps I will have to get back into my running, but I'm going to have to let my scalp heal for at least a week now after my little accident. Still, Mont Blanc is now out of the way (and let me tell you - for a route considered by many to be 'just a walk', it was a bloody hard one!)
