Who are the real victims of the recent Influenza A/H1N1, also known as Swine Flu, scare from the media? Of all the cases of people who unfortunately got infected there were 26 deaths and still it got a whooping rating of 5 out of 6 on the WHO pandemic scale, the highest rating anything ever has got on the scale since its start in 2005 (just after the last scare the bird flu).
It is clear that this scale is not based on the actual lethality or how easy people are infected, a normal flu that we have yearly kills somewhere around 500 000 people (mostly those already sick or at a avery young or very advanced age) world wide and infects millions and it never get more than a “yeah whateva” from the WHO pandemic scale – the . Where is the sense for proportions here?
I even had several people sending emails, almost daily about buying stocks of gloves, breathing masks, handwash alcohol, sterilization fluids and other such good to have if the Great Pandemic should strike us down.
Let’s take a look at what actually happened. The three top nations had the following statistics:
Mexico: 1 112 cases, 42 deaths
USA: 653 cases, 1 death
Canada: 165 cases, 0 deaths.
Out of a total of 1 930 confirmed cases in three countries there were 43 deaths.
The name itself provoked some responses, Egypt took the chance to rid the country of some 250 000 pigs because of it. Other nations had similar responses, some of the more extreme left-wing people in in Europe started to demand new vaccine factories being built.
For this people where hammered in the media with article after article about how to isolate themselves from the greater society and avoid the pig plague by avoiding contact with other people. The economical cost of the scare when people starts hamstering medicine and canned food is outrageous. In Australia people where told by local goverment no less to stock up for at least two weeks worth of food, for their personal survival.
Whole communities in the US shut down schools, work places and public office buildings for no other reason than fear based in the drummed up scare tactics of the public media conglomerates. Even when the more scientifically sound organisations finally came out and tried to calm people down they did not get by far the same headlines as the stories designed to scare people got.
Cuba closed all air traffic with Mexico, other countries followed suit leaving people there on holiday stranded for fear of a pandemy that already showed all signs of being low-risk.
I find this to be total madness.

Man kan väl nästan utgå ifrån att WHO vet nåt som inte vi vet. Jag har svårt att se att man skulle smacka på med en fet siffra utan att det finns något som helst belägg för det.
Jag håller med om att media har haussat det här, och att det är trist att media inte tar något som helst ansvar förutom för sina föräsljningssiffror.
Om det är så, borde de ju kunna delge det till allmänheten i stället för att förlöjliga sin egen skala. Det är rätt många som undrar vad i hela friden som pågick egentligen.
Att vissa delstater i USA deklarerade olika sorters emergency hänger ju samman med att det finns fonderade pengar som man inte får lös annars och som man behövde för att stärka forskning och provtagning exempelvis men vad WHO kan ha fått ut av att vråla varg på detta vis har jag inte greppat.
Also a very interesting fact about swine flu is that they used it as a pretence for some restricting actions in Mexico. Some days ago I heard an interesing report in an independent radio station about that: Mexican government has now the right to cancel public assemblies (e.g. demonstrations) to prevent the danger of infection. Government has also the right to control mail or telephone communication that might be related to swine flu (!). This has nothing to do with infection-prevention, this is simply surveillance. So people there have to be careful that their civil rights do not also become victims of swine pest.
Läste i DN att “paniken” hänger ihop med att den vanliga flunsan skördar dödsoffer bland gamla, medan svininfluensan har haft kål på yngre personer.
Det är en ny typ av smitta, så därför vet man inte riktigt hur den kommer att slå mot världen, och ingen vet riktigt hur farlig den är heller.
Kanske “better safe than sorry”-typ av beredskap, fram tills dess att det antingen visar sig att svinflunsan är ofarlig, eller farlig?
Ja att den drabbar unga beror ju på att subtypen är ny och unga har sämre generellt immunförsvar eftersom de inte “varit med om” lika många varianter som äldre har. Men de ingående delarna har ju förekommit tidigare och själva arketypen H1N1 är inte på något vis ny, den är välkänd bland flunsorna.
Jag vet inte riktigt, det var ungefär samma sak 2004 med fågelflunsan och det känns som att det blir mycket ropa varg den dagen det kommer något som verkligen sprider sig lätt mellan folk, har en längre inkubationstid och t.ex. ger upphov till något som liknar SARS då är det dags att dra öronen åt sig.
Jag tror att samhällsnyttan av early warnings snabbt förtas av bristen på läkemedel som uppstår pga hamstring, saker som hände på många ställen och även vissa ställen i sverige var att man sålde helt slut på handinfektionsmedel, munskydd och vissa länder införde kraftiga restriktioner, man stängde skolor i USA och Mexico och hela mindre samhällen i vissa fall. Sådana åtgärder kan i det långa loppet vara värre än några influensafall.
Nu verkar det ju som att dödligheten är låg och det främst då är unga i samhällen som inte klarar ge adekvat medicinsk vård som drabbas hårdast vilket kanske inte är så märkligt men i jämförelse med den vanliga influensan som skördar en halv miljon liv varje år tycks det mig som att det var rätt mycket slående på trummor även fast man snabbt såg att det nog inte skulle bli så farligt.
Lite som en militärövning kändes det, “fienden har intagit de östra delarna av Gotland, MKG håller ställningarna men kallar på förstärkning” som krigsskådespelen inleddes när jag lumpade.
